Our History
History
RLC’s history began in the Isle of Man in the mid-1950s, when Jean Burrell founded Ronaldsway Aircraft Company to support the growing manufacturing needs of Martin-Baker. Jean Burrell was the sister of Sir James Martin, the inventor of the Martin-Baker aircraft ejection seat, and Ronaldsway was established at Ballasalla, opposite the Isle of Man airport, as a dedicated aerospace subcontractor.
As demand increased, Ronaldsway expanded and the family established Langford Lodge in Northern Ireland, developing further manufacturing capacity on the shores of Lough Neagh. Through the 1960s and 1970s, the business continued to grow, adding new facilities, specialist processes and manufacturing capability.
Following the downturn in defence spending at the end of the Cold War, the business began a new phase of diversification. The acquisition of Callender Lancashire Aeropart in 1993 brought new customers and capabilities, including aerofoil expertise and a route into civil aerospace work.
In the early 2000s, Ronaldsway, Langford Lodge and Callender were brought together to form the RLC Group, creating a stronger and more integrated aerospace manufacturing group. The group later expanded internationally with the establishment of its Singapore facility in 2014 and added further UK manufacturing capacity with the Global Point facility outside Belfast in 2016.
Today, RLC remains privately owned and continues to support demanding civil and defence aerospace programmes through specialist manufacturing, treatments, testing, assembly and lifecycle support across its operating sites.

Changing of the guard
With the appointment of a third party CEO and wider senior leadership team, the day to day running of the business has been handed over to professional management and after 23 years running the RLC Group, Sarah Holt stepped back from an operational role and now acts as non-executive Chairman of the RLC Group. Family involvement with the RLC Group continues as Jean Burrell’s great grandson has joined the Group’s holding company.
2015 to 2016
Global Point facility built
RLC built a new factory at Global Point outside Belfast to provide additional manufacturing capacity for its work on titanium fuselage components and specialised assembly work for structural guide vanes for Pratt & Witney.
2014
RLC Singapore established
RLC established its Singapore facility at Seletar Business Park to support Rolls-Royce in Singapore, RLC’s first factory outside the British Isles.
Early 2000s
Formation of RLC Group
Ronaldsway, Langford Lodge and Callender were brought together to form the RLC Group. The Group was headed by Jean Burrell’s granddaughter Sarah Holt.
1993 onwards
New customer and product portfolios develop
Ronaldsway developed work for Rolls-Royce, while Langford Lodge diversified into secondary actuation work for TRW, later Goodrich and now UTAS.

Callender Lancashire Aeropart acquired
Callender Lancashire Aeropart was acquired, bringing aerofoil manufacture and power generation expertise. The acquisition supported diversification into new customers and products, including civil aerospace work.
1989
Defence downturn and diversification imperative
At the end of the 1980s, the end of the Cold War brought a downturn in defence spending and a reduction in Martin-Baker orders and so, in order to survive, Ronaldsway and Langford Lodge needed to diversify.

30-year anniversary
Ronaldsway celebrated its 30-year anniversary.
1984 to 1985
Further Ronaldsway expansion
Following Brian Holt’s death in 1984, Richard Holt took over a general manager at Ronaldsway and the site continued to expand, adding three new bays at the back of the factory. By 1985, the factory footprint was around 160,000 square feet and the workforce numbered around 670.
1983
Specialist barostat room and change in chairmanship
A barostat room was established to make barostats for Martin-Baker ejection seats. Jean Burrell died aged 94 and the Chairmanship passed to her daughter, Joan Holt.
1979
Computer capability develops
Richard Holt, Jean Burrell’s grandson, moved to the Isle of Man to work at Ronaldsway. With experience in computer programming, he helped develop the company’s computer capability following the installation of an IBM System 3 in 1977.
1971
Sports and Social Club opens
Ronaldsway opened a Sports and Social Club on land adjacent to the factory. It became a popular part of factory life, supporting sporting and social activities.
1969 to 1971
Lost wax foundry capability added
Ronaldsway developed a lost wax foundry to manufacture parts for the Martin-Baker Mark 10 seat and detail parts suitable for manufacture from castings. Planning permission was submitted in summer 1969, the first Foundry Foreman was appointed in August 1969, and the first sprue was poured in February 1971.
1964
Major factory expansion
By 1964, Langford Lodge was operating with a machine shop and sewing room for parachute packs and harnesses for the Martin Baker ejection seats. Ronaldsway added 78,400 square feet and the workforce increased to around 400 people.

As demand increased, Ronaldsway required additional manufacturing capacity and Langford Lodge was established to support the expanding work.
1959
Joan and Brian Holt move to the Isle of Man
Joan Holt, Jean Burrell’s daughter, and Brian Holt moved to the Isle of Man to run Ronaldsway. Brian Holt managed the factory and Joan Holt supported the finance function.

Langford Lodge site acquired
Jean Burrell acquired the former US Air Force base at Langford Lodge in Northern Ireland, on the shores of Lough Neagh. The site included a runway, 11 large aircraft hangars and many smaller buildings, and required substantial clearance and recovery work before it could be developed as a factory.
1956
Early workforce growth
By 1956, Ronaldsway employed around 120 people, marking the start of the company’s role as an important employer on the Isle of Man.
